The Smartphone War

B.A.I

current generation is divided.
if the Baby Boomers were divided on should we stay under the British rule, or should we pursue the path of independence and self-govern; and the Gen-X-ers are divided on which political parties best served their interests be it for the people or personal interest; the Gen-Y-ers are divided too.

in the times of technological advancements, where people are easily connecting and communicating with each other; what could possibly create a division among the Gen-Y-ers?
the very thing that unites us, is dividing us. it's the technology.

already we see groupies of Windows users, the cool and hip Mac users, and the "tegar" tech-geek using multiple versions of Linux OS. now emerges, the difference of smartphones.

most of the smartphone users, who have been affected by the cool factor of Apple, are embracing the iPhone team. surprisingly, some of them are those fond of the meek Windows Mobile OS. most of iPhone users are attracted to iPhone due to several factors. some of them are:-
- uber coolness of being seen with one
- easy to use. as Apple engineers really produced the best GUI and Human Computer Interaction for the smartphone.
- not much hassle. you only choose how big the data storage you want, and maybe the colour. that's all.
- there are lots of apps that are easily to retrieve/purchase/download, and you dont need to be a tech geek to know how to install it.
- wonderful screen display and icon. yeah, it's a repetition of point 2.
- not much button on it. simple.

surprisingly, there is this movement in town, currently gaining rapid support from the Gen-Y-ers. for the uninitiated, this movement have been in the field for some time, but only now they are gaining popularity among Malaysian Gen-Y population.
some interesting facts, Nokia was (and is) the best selling phones in late 90s because it is easy for users to send short message text, or fondly known as texting. and for some, texting via virtual/on-screen keyboard is not as fun as it should be. hence, Blackberry who has always been known for its superb qwerty keyboard begin their march.
so why the sudden popularity? here's why.
- physical keyboard. the main selling point for the cult of Blackberry.
- the professional look. unlike iPhone, if you're seen with a Blackberry, you are seen as a corporate figure. Very the executive
- email experience. Blackberry has the best email experience. you can retrieve and respond to your email whole day long, yet your Blackberry will not run out of battery juice like other phones.
- as mention above, the battery. Blackberry is a low-consumption device.
- most importantly, the Blackberry Messenger. it's like normal Instant Messenger, but only for Blackberry users. and it's encrypted, for goodness sake! how cool is that? you get to gossip all day long in a secured manner!

we also have this new boy in town, professing to be the next IN thing in smartphone teams. the green Android.
who are the users? well, they are the ones who would like to have the iPhone experience, but they hate of being told what to do and what they cannot do. what they can and what they cannot have. all in all, they are looking for the freedom in their smartphone experiences. these people are not your typical users. they know their thangs about smartphones and gadgets, and they are very adventerous. what attracts them to Android then?
- the freedom to choose the hardware, the apps, the way they interact with their belongings
- those who once called iPhone as suck-ass, but yet attracted to it, but decided not to join the iPhone team as it may hurt their pride and ego
- would like to be amongst the pioneers, as Android OS is the new kid in town.
-  looking for the best alternative for iPhone
- they are the proponent of the open-ness in technology
- Android phone have access to latest hardwares and configurations

to summarize:-
iPhone - simplicity
Blackberry - BlackBerry Messenger
Android - adventureous

WinMo and Symbian?
bah, humbug!

entry pagi sabtu

few announcements to makee:

my sister (Alya Amalina) is getting married on 24th April 2010. the reception will be held at our house.

the ego side of me is still coping with this news. plus the fact that she already has her own car and own place to live in, it's just too much for me.
but on the other side, i am soooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy for her! i can't believe my younger sister is getting married. feels like macam baru je last month tulis entry pasal their engagement.

i'm officially transferred to another section, still in KK

although the transfer is because of giving the opportunity to my colleague for exposure in Planning, i am happy because i'm being exposed to Development side next FY. meaning am going to cover 4 HR areas within 4 years in the company.

ok, sambung later. nak pergi main paintball

what i got for my birthday?

well, first and foremost, i had the SBO management committee and the VP of Education to sing birthday song to me :) hahaha.. good job lah people, betul2 surprise eh.
although i was expecting a big cake, and a naked lady jumping out of it. ah, better save it for my bachelor party eh?

she gave me a pair of plush toys, and a shirt. an informal shirt ok. rasa muda pulak bila dpt baju tu hehehe

as for me, i celebrated my birthday with a body service a.k.a berbekam/cupping treatment. had 20 cups, all at a price of rm300.

am planning to have acupuncture pulak next month. rm5 per needle.

anyway, she is against the idea of having a bicycle. meaning i have to scrap the plan to own a bicycle here in KK. as long as she is willing to fetch me and send me back home, no problem hehehe. although i need to find a way to be more green in commuting. i think i'll start walking back home everyday then.

good weekend, and here's looking forward for tomorrow!

Movie Review: Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief

ok, one thing for sure, Percy Jackson a.k.a PJ 1st adventure will never win any Oscar. Unless they have a new category for Old-Mythologies-With-A-New-Perspective movies.

the Greek mythologies never ceases to amaze me. they are a product of hundreds of years of oral-story telling passed down generation to generation, and the main story has multiple spin-offs. Unlike our local folk-lore, they even have proper background stories for each character.
(although come to think of it, based on Hikayat Melayu or something, we are descendants of great Greek emperor.. if we are talking about the same Iskandar Agung lah)

ok, i'm digressing.

my point is, if you want to see US twist of this Greek myths, in other words this series practically stripped Greece of its Gods!, then watch this.

as for me, i find this movie interesting. although there were some plot holes, and not strong acting, but by comparing this with 1st Harry Potter, i find this even more enjoyable.

conclusion: this movie kinda made me feel "i should read the books!", since there are lots of things unexplained. but for those who want to just have fun and enjoy an innocent movie, go and get yourself a good seat(s).

Movie Review: The Wolfman

watch it at your own risk.

i tried to enjoy the movie, even to the extent of had small laughs (alone) at the jokes in the movie, but when the credit rolls, i cant feel the connection to the movie.

spoiler ahead (well, as if you have not read it somewhere la kan?)

Lawrence came back to his house upon knowing his brother was killed. apparently he ran away from the house after being wrongly accused of imagining that his father killed his mother. cut the story short, he was bitten, and transformed into a werewolf. terrorized the village that night, he was caught by the police, and was sent back to the mental institution he called home years ago. then he realised, his father is the werewolf. so he ran berserk and settled the score with his father. the end. oh, he died. and the inspector will be in the sequel: The Scotland Yard Wolfman!

even my english grammar and spelling is broken.

hurmm...
i stayed awake throughout the movie because i paid rm16.50 for the movie (2 pax bah). and since she was asleep, i guess i'd better ensure at least the admission fees were worth it.

again, go watch it if you want to have the noir feel. else, go have fun watching Percy Jackson. it is much more better.

Wolfman is like The Spirit.

how to choose a netbook - geek guide made simple

Nod, to assist you.

1st thing, it’s a good idea indeed to do that. In fact, I plugged in my netbook to my tv to enjoy downloaded movies. Feel gila. Make sure you plugged in the audio jack as well lah.

2nd thing, speed. Most netbook come with standard processor speed. It can open multiple apps, but expect some hang time if u open up lots of application and leave it running at the background.

3rd thing, space. Hard disk space. Netbooks come in 2 varieties 1) normal hard disk usually in variations of 80/100/120 GB. 2) Solid-State-Drive (SSD) comes in variations of 8/16/24/32 GB. While normal HardDisk can have huge volume of data, SSD is more durable. Example, if jatuh kea pa ke, SSD takkan rosak dengan mudah, unlike normal Hard Disk. Reason why? Sebab SSD uses same technology as Thumbdrive. But remember, SSD netbook sangat mahal.

4th thing, cost. Don’t be fooled with “oh-this-is-cheap-and-from-brand-X-so-this-must-be-good”. Sometimes it’s cheap because they have nothing inside it i.e no Windows OS, no wi-fi. However, if you’re paying for more than RM1800, with its weight nearly 2 kg++, then you’ve been fooled too.

Best netbook will be of light, weight around 1 kg – 1.5 kg; must have wi-fi and Bluetooth; multiple USB ports (2 is not enough); built-in webcam; good ergonomics (meaning u have to test the mouse pad and keyboard first!); and also good display and sound (meaning it wont glare. Don’t be fooled with the Dolby Speaker, NVIDIA Graphic card and what not. At the end of the day, you’ll use it to do some spreadsheet, listen to music and watch movies with the earphone plugged into the audio port). Price range should be of RM 1300 – RM1800.

So far I’m quite happy with my BetNet, AcerOne Aspire netbook. Asus eePC is good as well. HP Mini pun nice. But its awkward mouse pad turned me off.

At the end of the day, if you have found various netbooks with the same price and specs (which they will be), always choose based on these criteria (the most important at the bottom)

· Battery life time (it wont be fun to be constantly charging your netbook’s battery)

· Warranty coverage (so you know how long you can perform crash test to your netbook)

· How it looks like (hey, who would want to be seen with hideous netbook? Even if it powered with super-fast processor?)

Hope this geek guide helps a lot.

it's AirAsia now for the Company's EnP arm

2 days ago, the subsidiary's region office received a new instruction from our HQ.
staff is to use AirAsia and Fireflyz, replacing the normal practice of flying with the national carrier MAS.

as usual, people beginning to become suspicious, and i can sense the dissatisfaction began to brew amongst the staff. they might be pointing fingers to HR.

*sigh*

so i immediately pointed out to them, that the new direction originates from our Finance department (i dont think so they feel that way). and it's not HR doings (although HR introduced new policies in the not-too-distant past)

they voiced out their dissatisfaction, and i decided to rebutt their grievances. here's what i wrote:-

(putting normal employee hat)

Ok, the ones who will be affected akan betul2 terasa. There’s no denying that. Am so used to MAS Malaysia Hospitality. Ah, the free flow juices…

(/putting normal employee hat)

Since there’s nothing much that we can do, since the management already made and cascade the decision; all we can do now is to stay positive and try to look things from management PoV (also, make sure our bosses pun naik AirAsia jugak lah).

FAQ

But AirAsia does not allow open-ticket or reschedule flight. Meeting at KL always postpone at the last minute. How lah?

True. But let this teach us all (PCSB groupwide), to be firm in arranging meetings, especially those affecting staffs travelling from regions.

If say for example, we already bought the flight ticket, and has confirmed on the meeting a week earlier, only suddenly to be informed that the meeting has been postponed to another date (yes, sungguh frustrating), then I would like to suggest for us to back-charge the PONC cost to the dept that organized the meeting.

Cannot collect frequent flyer points anymore!!!

As mentioned in previous email, supposedly all Enrich points are actually owned by the Company. But as till now, I believe the company is closing one eye on this. Let us just keep low profile on this, else maybe suddenly the management decide to instruct MAS to delete all frequent flyer points off its staffs :P (like what happened to the previously practice of giving meal allowance to new staffs reporting to region. Some good fellas decided to brag about it to their friends at other OPUs, and these things made their way to Group Talent Sourcing, and now no meal allowance for the new staffs).

Seats not comfortable!

Err… that one cannot help. That is personal preference. But am sure the hot seats tu bit more selesa than the cold seats. (hot and cold, get it?) more leg space. I donno, never buy that hot-seats pun.

AirAsia ticket cost more than MAS!

No comment on that as well, as the direction actually came from CFA. It would be wise not to argue on that. (I’m sure they’ve struck agreement with AirAsia on getting corporate rate or something).

Cannot open ticket anymore!!

Hush hush lah! Don’t say it out loud. Why in the first place are you “open”-ing your ticket, when the company paid for you to use that ticket? Adakah anda “menyalahguna kemudahan Syarikat”? LOL

AirAsia is known for flight delays lah..

And I thought some of u guys said AirAsia is much better than MAS in timing? Anyway, this could be another reason why we CAN take our flight during office hour, or a day before! J

Movie Review: District 9

if i could only use one sentence to describe District 9, it would be,

"this movie showed the good, not too good, bad, not so bad, and bad-ass sides of human who will discrimanate when they can, and be charitable when they feel like; all in while able to swtich personalities in just split second depending on how he/she perceives the threat or condition"

post rambang

Cara kurang minyak menghasilkan dramet yg just nice, tapi at expense of kulit ayam terlebih goreng, hampir ke tahap hangit kerana terlalu lama dibiarkan di atas minyak. Nasib baik saya menggunakan prinsip masak menggunakan haba terperangkap.
Oklah, nak masak maggi goreng pulak.
Lapar la pulak.. Hish..

who is your "perfect match" quiz result

my facebook quiz result:

Azamil completed the quiz "Who is your "perfect match"?" with the result Ambitious & Driven

Your perfect match is someone who values success, is a natural born leader and constantly works hard to improve themselves and their life. They will deeply appreciate your ability to make them feel special. This type of person loves admiration and your giving, loving and wonderfully kind nature will make you their perfect mate. Your match also enjoys biking, hiking, working out and eating healthy--taking care of their body is a priority to them and they always look their best. This person will always protect you and keep your best interests at heart- they really want to go the extra mile to make you happy. The top traits they are looking for in a mate is loyalty and trustworthiness. They love a good challenge and are visionaries. This can hinder them when falling in love because they are very driven to find "the one" and won't settle for less. However, once they fall in love with you, they will be very affectionate and are enthusiastic about the relationship

benci!

so we sat there by the lake, and talked about what the future might hold for us.
as if everything was planned, the nearby stall played our song.
and that was when i had to share the news.

"i just received my transfer letter. it has been confirmed, that i'll be going to Sabah"
"when will it be?"
"next week. i will need to report to my new boss on 1st april"
"benci!"

suddenly, silence engulfed us. as much as i'd like to avoid it, i couldn't resist the warmth and comfort brought by the silence to me. i felt connected to the universe, as if i was one with it. i felt calm, and the thought of why it couldn't be like this everyday came knocking on the door of my mind.

the serenity was interrupted with a failed attempt by her to hide the sobbing.

so i held her tight, and she laid her head on my shoulder, and continued crying.
not knowing what to say, what to do to console her, i just kept my mouth shut, and gazed straight to the office building at the horizon, beautifully lit as if to remind others that it is the symbol of this blessed nation.

while we were there, the radio at nearby stall finished playing our song.

and continued with another song, the one that used to be "our song" in my previous relationship.
